WIPO has recently released its annual report on World Intellectual Property figures. The report is named as WIPI (World Intellectual Property Indicators 2021) and it shows that the trademark, patent and industrial design filing activities grew during 2020, despite the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the WIPI report, global trademark filing activity rose by 13,7%, patent filing activity rose by 1,6% and industrial designs by 2%. WIPO states that the subject report compiles data from 150 national and regional authorities.
China is the leading country in all 3 major types of IP: Trademarks (54,3% of world total), patents (45% of world total) and industrial designs (55,5% of world total) filings of 2020 occurred in China. It’s worth mentioning that most of the IP activity of China is driven by domestic IP filings within China.
Now let’s look at Turkey’s rankings in World Intellectual Property Indicators report 2020:
In general, we can say that Turkey is ranked within the first 25 countries of global trademark, patent and design filings (both resident and abroad).
Turkey ranked as 23rd in global patent filings, 10th in global trademark filings and 6th in global Industrial design filings in 2020.
Trademark filings ranking of Turkey:
The ranking of Turkey in total worldwide trademark filing is 10th in 2020. The largest increases in trademark filing numbers were seen in Indonesia as +44.3%, in the Russian Federation as +29.7%, in the U.S. as +29.4% and in Turkey as (+28.8%). According to the numbers of trademarks filed by residents of Turkey, its rankings moved from 10th position in 2019 to rank 8 in 2020. However, many middle-income countries with high trademark filing volumes (such as Turkey) counts less than 10% of trademark filing towards seeking protection abroad.
Another interesting point of the report is that the Germany-based applicants filed the largest volumes of non-resident trademarks received by the office of Switzerland (35.5%) and Turkey (17.4%).
The classes of services related to “business services” is at the top in trademark filings in Turkey (23.6%). The trademark registration activity in Turkey increased as +15.2% in 2020. However, Madrid system international trademark applications from Turkey declined as –5.9%. Turkey is still in the 20 most designated Madrid system members in 2020 with 9,182 filings.
As a side note:
These trademark statistics are compiled basing on WIPO’s “class count” system related to trademark filings. So that what is “class count”?
A trademark application may refer to different classes of goods or services. Many offices use the Nice Classification, an international classification of goods and services for registering trademarks and service marks. Applications received at these offices are classified according to one or more of the 45 Nice classes. Some offices allow single-class fling only, meaning applicants have to file a separate application for each class. Others permit multi-class flings, enabling applicants to file a single application in which a number of classes can be specified. To improve international comparisons of the numbers of applications received, it helps to compare class counts across offices. Class counts are also used to make trademark registration internationally comparable. This method for comparing offices began in 2004, the first year for which complete class count data are available (Source: WIPO World Intellectual Property Indicators report 2021).
