According to WIPO’s Madrid System yearly review about 2020, international trademark applications filed via the Madrid System slightly decreased by 0.6% in 2020. The reason of this decrease – as you may guess – is the ongoing pandemic. (As a side note; you can read my previous article about International IP Index 2021: Global intellectual property rankings and Turkey here).
Because the pandemic period suspended the economic growth all over the world, -of course- this effected the expansion strategy of the existing brands and the creation of new brands during 2020. Consequently, international trademark applications filed via Madrid System decreased by 0.6% to 63,800 in 2020.

New members of the system
However, the number of the members of the Madrid system continues to grow steadily. Trinidad and Tobago became a member of the system in 2020 and recently Pakistan became the newest member of the system in 2021. So that the geographical coverage of the Madrid system includes 124 countries in total.

Countries of the top users/applicants of the Madrid System
According to WIPO reports, the largest users (applicants) of the Madrid System are in the United States of America (U.S.) (10,005), Germany (7,334), China (7,075), France (3,716) and the United Kingdom (U.K.) (3,679). Applicants located in Asia filed nearly a quarter of all Int’l trademark applications in 2020.
Declines among the top user countries of the system
However, there are big declines in Int’l trademark filings in some countries. For example, Madrid system Int’l trademark applications from France declined by –16.3%, from Switzerland –5.4% and from Turkey by –15.4% because of the economic impacts of the pandemic.
Top applicant companies of the international trademarks
The top filer of the Int’l trademarks is the Swiss pharmaceutical company Novartis AG in 2020 (233 Madrid applications). The second top filer is Huawei Technologies of China (197 applications) and the third one is Shiseido Company of Japan (130 applications). They are followed by ADP Gauselmann of Germany (123 applications) and French company L’Oréal (115 applications). We see that most of these “top filer” companies are based in Germany (25), U.S. (12), China (11), Japan (7), Switzerland (7), France (6) and the Republic of Korea (5).
